The second steering committee meeting of the ASCENT project was held on October 17th to 21st 2016 in Manchester. The meeting was attended by 34 representatives of the programme and partner countries institutions and the Sri Lankan Local Government Authorities as the associated partner.

In the meeting, the institutional reports from each of the Asian partner and the national reports on research and innovation capacity analysis was presented and discussed. Complementing the report was the statistical analysis of the baseline survey result. The information collected from these reports provided the participants with important information required for the preparation of the future training plan.


All delegates visited the University of Huddersfield, where the meeting session was held. The session was opened with a welcoming speech by the Dean of School of Art, Design and Architecture, Prof. Mike Kagioglou, and was closed by the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bob Cryan. The next day, the delegates also visited the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and were welcomed by Prof. Robert Walsh – Director of Research, Prof. Robert Roy Wallace – Dean of School of Engineering, and Prof. Akintola Akintoye – Dean of Research and Innovation, College of Science and Technology.  

Some of the important points highlighted in the meeting were:

  • Work packages co-leaders need to work closely in identifying and addressing cross work packages issues
  • Work packages co-leaders need to coordinate closely in designing training sessions, in order to avoid repetition and manage overlapping subjects.
  • Country-specific issues, and its specific target groups, need to be identified and addressed effectively.
  • The project needs to encourage two-way knowledge and skills sharing between the partner and programme countries' institution experts

In accordance with the inputs collected from the 2nd steering committee meeting, it was agreed that the first training event will be held in Weligama, Sri Lanka, on February 27th to March 4th, which will be run along with the 3rd steering committee meeting.
